CREATING ORIGINAL THEATRE
"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing." - Walt Disney
Through the use of group discussion, physical exercises, and random dancing, we will create a piece of original theatre. Every voice has something to offer, so let's have some fun while learning a bit about ourselves and those around us. Students should come prepared to move (skinny jeans and short skirts may result in some awkward exchanges). This program is ideal for actors, techies, groupies, and penguins alike! Let's see what we can discover when we stop caring for a while and just play.

MICHAEL CHEKHOV INTENSIVE - physical ways to find connection to character
Actor/Teacher Michael Chekhov explored the question of how to find emotional truth via non-analytical means. The Potential of Archetypes --- Michael Chekhov found that his mentor Konstantin Stanislavsky's techniques ran counter to his own system and so spent his career redirecting the golden “IF I Was...” through his body. The study of archetypes enables the actor to follow his intuition and bypass the intellect to build imaginative, layered and specific physical lives for their characters. Come explore some physical ways to find a deep connection to character. Actors, non-actors, and the curious are invited!

COMMEDIA DELL ARTE MASK WORKSHOP - get inside the mask!
An actors theatre, where they have to get inside the mask to encompass the essential elements of each character to make them work. There is no privacy in Commedia and the actors have to interact with their audience and fellow performers to create the energy of a piece. The mask does not represent an individual, but it’s function is to project an archetype (not stereotype) so that the characters can easily adapt into any story.

COMPANY ACTING - Lecoq and Complicite.
Everything moves... as do I! Joy and sorrow, confrontation too. A vague point appears, hazy and confused, A point of convergence, The temptation of a fixed point, In the calm of all the passions. Point of departure and point of destination, In what has neither beginning or end. Naming it, endowing it with life, giving it authority For a better understanding of what Movement is. -- Jacques Lecoq. August 1997
The process of exploration allows the performers to free their imaginations and bodies and find a particular approach as a Company.
Facilitator: R. Allen Babcock (Hotchkiss) MEETS IN ELFERS HALL
